Grade 7/8, December 13

Parents of grade 7/8

We have an exciting week ahead, on Wednesday we will be watching The Giver, and on Thursday the students will be going to the church to pack hampers and then off to shops in the afternoon.  They will be working on a power point presentation of their choice to give to the class.
Students will be giving and receiving notes or small gifts throughout the week from their secret santa.

Grade 7/8 Dec.6-11

Good Evening
I am looking forward to another great week at school.  The students have been busy preparing for the concert, please remind them to bring their costumes to school one last time on Monday.
The students will have shops on Wednesday this week, I hope you enjoyed some of the cooking they did last week.
We are planning a trip to the Church on December 17th a.m. to help make Christmas hampers, I will send out permission forms this week and be asking for parents to help drive.  Just a heads up that we will have a secret Santa gift exchange last week of school(under $10).

Bible - The theme for this month in chapel is The Light, memory verse is Eph 2:10
7 Math- Students will be starting a new unit on probability
8 Math- Students will be starting a new unit of 3D Shapes
ELA- We will finish The Giver and 4 assignments to go with it.
           The students will also learn proof reading strategies
Science- We have been learning about viscosity and will start looking at how volume and mass relate to        the density of fluids.
S.S.- Egypt party is on Tuesday

Nov.23-30

Dear parents,

I trust you received the report cards Friday.  I am looking forward to meeting with you in the next couple of days to review the things your child has been doing in school together. We have been busy posting their work on a computer program called Fresh Grade for you to see.

This week at school:
Bible - Students learned about Esau and Jacob, and the Beatitudes
Math - We are finishing up a unit on Fractions and Percent
ELA - We are half way done reading The Giver.  The students have been busy working on various assignments.
Science - We will be doing a few experiments this week testing viscosity. Some students were asked to bring some fluids in to test.

This week we will also start practicing for our Christmas play.  Students will be required to bring their lines home to memorize them.

Going forward, I will have the room open at lunch one day a week so the kids can do crafts such as scarf making, or help make bookmarks as a fundraiser.

Just a reminder that Shops is this Monday and they will be starting the cooking unit.

Week of November 16

Dear Parents,

I hope you had a great weekend and a relaxing break from school. 

Monday (tomorrow) is We Day and the students need to be at school early.  

There will be no shops this week, as the next one is Monday, November 23rd. Please take note of the Santa Claus Breakfast on Saturday - it looks like it will be a lot of fun!

Math - Students will be learning about fractions, decimals, and percent.
ELA - Students will continue working on the novel study "The Giver".
Science - We have started our next unit on Fluids and will be doing a few experiments on density.
Bible - Our chapel theme this week is The Robe of Righteousness.

I am happy with how the students are putting in a solid effort in the classroom.  As the second term begins I will expect that the students continue to give their best in their studies.  My expectations will be greater in term two and there may be a bit more homework.

November 8th
Dear Parents

I am happy to announce a successful 1st term is almost complete and I have had a great time spending time teaching and learning with your children.  We had a fun time eating, carving pumpkins, dancing, and making mummies during our Halloween party last Friday.  We also listened to classmates share  powerpoint presentations on a variety of diseases.  Make sure you have your child show you what they did, I was so impressed.

Permission slips went home for We Day, and Rate and Review, please send them back on Monday.

This week at school we will have a Remembrance Day Chapel starting just before 11:00 on Tuesday, please feel free to join us. There will be no school Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. The next Shops class is on November 23rd.

Math - Grade 7 & 8 will be learning about fractions, decimals and percents
ELA- Students will continue reading The Giver
Science- We are starting the next unit on Fluid

Week of October 26-30th

This week at school
Picture retakes are this Monday.
On Tuesday shops will end early due to early dismal, so the students will be returning to our school for phys-ed.
On Friday the students may dress up and we will have a class party, so please feel free to bing snacks for the class that day.

Math - Grade 7's will be starting a geometry unit
Math - Grade 8's will continue to learn about the Pythagorean Relationship
LA- We will have spelling this week and continue reading stories about courage
Science - The students are giving powerpoint presentations on diseases that they studied.
Religion - The students will learn what water represents in the Bible

October 13-16

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Here's a look at the short week ahead of us.

In chapel the theme will be water (Baptism).
In math, grade 7's will be learning order of operation, and the grade 8's will be preparing for a test on ratios and rates.
In language arts, we will continue studies from our book called "True Courage".  Our spelling words are taken from the book.
In science, we will be examining leaves and water movement in plants.

This coming Friday we will have someone come teach about Anti-Bullying.

Please note that there will be no shops this week.

A special thanks to everyone who helped decorate for Thanksgiving.  We will leave this beautiful display up for the month.

If you happen to come into the school this week, you can see your child's poems and Bible verses  in the hallway.  Also notice the bulletin board of recommendations that the students created outside our classroom door.

October 5-9

This week the school will be having SPIRIT WEEK!
Monday is hat day, bring a $1 and wear a hat.
Tuesday is Wacky day
Wednesday is Pyjama day
Thursday is Jersey day
Friday is TerryFox Run at 2:15 and school blue day

I look forward to seeing everyone participating in spirit week.  I hope the students have already been asking to do extra jobs around the house, so they can earn some extra money for the fundraiser.

Our class had a great time going to MTYP this week.  We saw an outstanding show called "Danny in the Basement".  It got us thinking about such topics as poverty, friendships, our imagination and self-esteem.

I am looking forward to seeing everyones 3D cells this week.
Shops is on Thursday this week.
It is thanksgiving this coming weekend, so there will be no school next Monday.

Math-  grade 7-operations with decimal numbers
           grade 8-rates and ratios
ELA- We will start reading various articles and stories about courage.
Science- We will discover what diseases and viruses are and how we defend against them.
Chapel- Our theme for October is Water (baptism)

September 21
I am happy to report a great start to the school year.  Students have been very busy learning, helping around the school, and playing together.

This week we will be walking to 7-11 for a Slurpee before shops on Tuesday.  Please feel free to pick up your child at Nelson Mac at 3:45,  just let me know.  They can also walk back to the school and be picked up at 4:00.

This Week at School
Bible- We will continue reading in Genesis about Noah and the Flood.
           Our memory verse is Hebrews 11:6
Math- Students are learning about graphing and coordinates.
LA- Students will have new spelling words, compare viewpoints regarding the upcoming election, and                   complete novel study assignments.
Science- We will learn about diffusion and osmosis. At home students have a 3D cell project that will be due Oct. 2nd.

I hope everyone had a great weekend outdoors.  It was great to attend the church kickoff and to enjoy a picnic together outside.  Please feel free to attend the Love and Logic evening this Tuesday at the school.

Our fist week back at school was great!

Bible- The students had daily devotions and a chance to respond in their journals.  Our memory verse this week will be Psalm 139:13-14.  In chapel two students read scripture and we started learning about our Journey with Jesus.
Math-gr.7 we practiced plotting coordinates.    gr.8 we created and studied graphs.
LA Students started reading and responding to their novel. Next week we will begin our spelling program.
Science- We learned about living and nonliving things, did an experiment and had a snack of once living things. This week we will look at cells and use a microscope.

We had a busy first week back, from unpacking supplies, labelling them, organizing our desks  and switching from summer gear into work mode. Everyone worked very hard and deserved a restful weekend.  I am looking forward to the week ahead.

Welcome! - September 8, 2015

Welcome parents and students to a new year.  I am excited to get to know everyone and to join Beautiful Saviour Lutheran School. It is my privilege to teach grade 7/8 this year and it is my intent to create a safe, healthy learning environment for the students.

During the first day of school the students will have chapel at 11:00, which parents are invited to attend. Our theme this year is "Journey with Jesus", each class will have an opportunity to respond weekly to  what is taught.  Make sure to check out the school website weekly to find out what is happening at the school. I will be sending some information home regarding the Practical Arts program that runs every day 5 of the Louis Riel School Division.  The first one will be Monday afternoon (Sept. 14th). You will also receive a note about the use of devices in the classroom.

September:
Bible - We will read and study the book of Genesis.
7 Math - We will learn how to create and find coordinates on a graph.
8 Math - We will create charts and graphs to represent gathered data.
Science - We will learn about animal and plant cells.
ELA- We will look at textual cues, how to create and follow a plan, and organize ideas.
            We will also work on reading, writing and spelling.

ELA--Students will complete their Short Stories Unit on Friends for Life and will begin a Poetry Unit to finish the year.

Math--Gr. 7--Students are completing Chapter 12--Measures of Central Tendency.

Math--Gr. 8--Students are completing Chapter 12--Tessellations.


Social Studies--Students have completed the History and Culture of Australia and have begun The Impact of Westernization in Africa.

Science--The students have been talking about solutions including solutions and solvents.

ELA--Students are completing a Short Stories Unit on Friends for Life.

Math--Gr. 7--Students have begun Chapter 11--Solving Equations.

Math--Gr. 8--Students have begun Chapter 11--Probability.


Social Studies--Students have been discussing Democratic Citizenship and our Canadian Rights and Freedoms.

Science--The students are exploring heat and how it affects particles within a substance.  They completed an experiment to measure whether 100 mL of water or 200 mL of water would heat faster.  The information will be graphed and analyzed.

ELA--Students are completing their last novel study using the Forest of Reading Books.  When done, they will be able to vote on their favorite as well as complete a final project on their favorite book. 

Math--Gr. 7--Students are completing Chapter 9--Adding and Subtracting Integers.

Math--Gr. 8--Students are completing Chapter 9--Linear Relations.


Social Studies--Students are presenting information about a culture/ethnicity that they have chosen using Power Point.

Science--The students have a Unit Test tomorrow on the Earth's Crust.  They have begun their unit on Particle Theory by discussing what a theory is.

ELA--Students are working on various novel studies using the Forest of Reading Books.  When done, they will be able to vote on their favorite.  Students have also been working on an Easter Story cartoon depicting the traditional story and a modern day cartoon.

Math--Gr. 7--Students are working on various math skills.

Social Studies--Students are studying Global Rights:  identity, culture, human rights, etc.

Science--The students have just finished studying plate tectonics. They will complete a unit assignment the week after Spring Break.

ELA--Students are beginning to work on a creative writing/art project on their Dream Room.  They continue to work on grammar, spelling, and Reader Responses.

Math--Gr. 7--Students are completing Ch. 6--Introduction to Fraction Operations and will start Ch. 7--Add and Subtract Fractions.

Math--Gr. 8--Students are completing Ch. 6--Fraction Operations this week. They will start Ch. 7--Volume next week.
Social Studies--Students have been discussing how people use the land, our actions and the four spheres, and our interaction with the world around us.  We will complete this Unit this week with a small test near the end of the week.

Science--The students have finished their class work on structures and will begin a unit on the Earth's Crust on Tuesday.
