Congratulations to our Gr. 5--8 Band!! Your performance at the Symphony last night was excellent. What a wonderful event for all to spend time with their families at. Thank-you to all who participated. Congratulations to Mr. B for making the band a great success!!!

Artists in The School--Thank-you Allison Moore (artist in residence) for creating a beautiful mural on our hallway walls with the students. Please take a look at your child's creation the next time you are in the school. They did a great job and should be very proud!

ELA--I will be checking reading logs on Monday for 150 min. of reading as well as Agendas for signatures. The students have completed their final novel projects for Searching for David's Heart and half of the class presented on Friday. The others will present on Monday. The students will be starting a Fairy Tale project to go with I Love to Read Week.

Math--Both Grades continue to work on Ch. 6 this week on fractions. They should finish by Thursday and hopefully will have a test then.

Social Studies--Students are completing their unit on Egypt this week and will be starting a new Chapter on the Ancient Greeks. They will have a test on all of Egypt on Wed. Feb. 15.

Religion--Pastor Schnarr will be coming for a visit in our class on Feb. 22. We will be starting a children's bible story project. If you have any Children's Bible Story books at home could you please send them to school with your child on Tuesday. They will be selecting a story to summarize and illustrate and then present to their reading buddies.

French-- We are finishing a large unit and the students will have a test on this material on February 21st. They have had two Quizzes reviewing of which will help them boost the outcome of the test. The following week should be filled with fun and will conclude with the field trip to "Festival du voyageur".

Festival du Voyageur--The students will be going to Festival on Friday with Mme Hélène. Mrs. McCrea will be taking the students to the park and Mr. B. will be meeting them there. There will be two staff members with the students at all times. If parents who are driving wish to stay they are welcome to but will need to pay their entrance fee to the park. The students are participating in two activities: Lacrosse and Aboriginal Camp. After these two activities they will have an opportunity to go to the Sugar Shack for maple toffee as well as to the tobogganing area. Students will need to bring money for the maple toffee. They may have a little bit of supervised time in the souvenir building. If you would like them to have money for this then please send it along but they will need to be responsible for their own money. It looks like the weather should be good but students should dress accordingly as they will be outside for approximately three hours.

Artisits in The School--this program will be going on all this week from Feb. 6--10. The Gr. 5--8 will be creating a mural on the hallway wall at the school. Allison Moore (artist in residence) recommends having the children send a smock or definitely clothes ok to possibly get paint on. The grades 5-8 will be using paint that is not water based, so should definitely wear a smock.

The students have begun working on a final Novel Study project. It will be due Friday, Feb. 10. I have been unable to find the movie online for download. If anyone knows of a site that might have it available please let me know. It was a made for TV movie by Disney and was shown on ABC.

Math--Both Grades have begun working on Ch. 6 this week on fractions. They will continue this chapter for the rest of the week.

Social Studies--Students are completing their unit on Egypt this week. They presented their research on their god or goddesses and will be working on the characteristics of the culture. They will have a test on all of Egypt on Mon. Feb. 13 (??)

We are practicing four dialogues in French: "How are you?", "What is your name?","How old are you?", and "Where do you live?". They should be reviewing the material as, come the first week of February, they will have a quiz every week to get ready for the term test on February 21. Some of the students still did not finish their homework: compose fifteen simple sentences using the verbs on their list; working at home is just as important as participating in class so please help them along.

Forms and Information--Your child should have brought home a letter from PIP regarding collection of wine for a wine raffle fundraiser. Wine should be delivered to the school by Feb. 3.
Registration information went home on Friday to the Grade 7s for registration for next year. Your spot will be guaranteed if the forms are returned by Feb. 3. On Feb. 6 new student registration begins.

The students thoroughly enjoyed working with Christine Lachance this week during an Improv Workshop on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Thanks very much Christine for sharing your expertise with us.

Social Studies--Students are continuing with their unit on Egypt. They will be continuing next week completing and presenting their research on their god or goddesses and then will be working on the characteristics of the culture. They will have a test on all of Egypt early Feb.

Thankfully the weather has broken and it is warmer. Please make sure that the students have clothing for cold weather as I'm sure it will get cold again.

Math--Gr. 8s are working on Ch. 5 using formulas to calculate surface area for 3D objects. The Gr. 7s are completing Ch. 5 on Probability. Both Grades should expect a test on Tuesday or Wednesday this week.

Social Studies--Students are continuing with their unit on Egypt. They created scripts with a hieroglyphic word from their Egypt unit. They are posted on the bulletin board in a pyramid shape. They will be continuing next week with women in Egypt, gods and goddesses and characteristics of the culture. They will have a test on all of Egypt the end of Jan./early Feb.

French--A field trip to Festival du Voyageur is being planned for Feb. 17 from 12:00-3:00. More information will follow.

I hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas holiday with time spent with family and friends. We are all trying to get back into a routine at school. Hopefully this is happening at home as well.

ELA--I will be checking reading logs on Monday for 150 min. of reading as well as Agendas for signatures. We have begun doing our spelling units again. The students learned about writing Persuasive Paragraphs this week. They will be beginning a class novel on Monday, Searching for David's Heart.

Math--Gr. 8s started Ch. 5 on Surface Area and have been creating nets for 3-D objects. The Gr. 7s started Ch. 5 on Probability.

Social Studies--Students continued with their unit on Egypt with pyramid building and researching some different pyramids. They will be continuing next week with hieroglyphics, terminology, and characteristics of the culture.

Good Afternoon,

Band Trip to the Forks--The band students will be performing at the Forks on Monday, December 19 at 10:00. We will be leaving the school at 9:30 to arrive and set-up the instruments for the performance. The performance will be over at approximately 10:30. Students will be returning to the school after their performance. Thanks in advance for volunteering to drive.

Christmas Gift Exchange--This was a huge success. The students seemed to have fun with the exchange. Thank-you to all who participated.

Christmas Hamper Program will be running from Dec 16-20 this year. Our classroom hamper has been completed. We would like to have it delivered on Monday. If anyone is available, please let me know so I can contact the family.

Christmas Concert--Students are to arrive at 6:00 wearing their Christmas "best". If anyone is unable to attend please let Mr. B or myself know as soon as possible.

ELA--I will be checking reading logs on Monday for 150 min. of reading as well as Agendas for signatures. Students are working on their last Reader's Theatre project and will finish it up next week.

Math--Gr. 8s had a test on Ch. 4 today. They will be completing a comprehensive review next week on Ch. 1-4. Tests will go home for signing on Monday. The Gr. 7s wrote their test on Ch. 4 today and will receive it back on Monday for signing. They will be working on their comprehensive review of Ch.1-4 next week as well.

Social Studies--Students completed their Egyptian role play "meeting" and some mapping work. They will continue with their unit on Egypt next week.

Band Trip to the Forks--The band students will be performing at the Forks on Monday, December 19 at 10:00. We will be leaving the school at 9:15 to arrive and set-up the instruments for the performance. The performance will be over at approximately 10:30. Students will be able to stay at the Forks to skate and have lunch. They will leave the Forks at approximately 12:40 to return to the school for afternoon classes at 12:50. The students will be able to skate from 10:45 until 11:45 and then have lunch at the Forks. Please send money for them to purchase their lunch. If you have ordered lunch from the Lunch Lady program the students will be able to take it home with them. Skates can be rented at the Forks: $2.00 for students, $4.50 for adults. The students will have a short time to shop during their lunch time.

Christmas Hamper Program will be running from Dec 16-20 this year. I will be giving the students information about our classroom hamper on Monday. Our class will be providing a family with a hamper and will be donating all of the non-perishable items as well as gifts for the children. We are definitely looking for families to participate in delivering the hampers for the church as well as someone to deliver our classroom hamper.

They wrote their own Reader's Theatre based on a story of their choice and performed them in groups. Three Reader Responses for December will be due on Dec. 16.

Math--Gr. 8s are working on Ch. 4--Percents, Fractions and Decimals. They will be writing a test by the end of next week. The Gr. 7s have been working on Ch. 4, Fractions & Percents with Ms. Kuhl. They also will be writing a test by the end of next week.

Social Studies--Students wrote a test on Wednesday for Ancient Societies. They should have brought it home for signing. The have started their new unit on Egypt with Ms. Kuhl.

Report Cards and Portfolio Conferences--It was great to see everyone at the conferences. Please make sure to return the report card envelopes signed as soon as possible.

Shoe Box Donations--Thank-you for your donations. The school put together 20 Shoeboxes and they were picked up by the Paramedics on Tuesday last week.

Shops--Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately to walk to Shops. The weather is changing and they will be expected to walk to shops no matter what the weather is.

Christmas Hamper Program will be running from Dec 14-17 this year. We will be providing more information as we get closer about how you can be involved. We are definitely looking for families to participate in delivering the hampers, especially on the Saturday.

Social Studies--We are comparing cultures of Paleolithic and Neolithic Times.

Phys. Ed.--Mr. Wozney gave the students a Food Guide to fill out for six days. It is due on Thursday, Dec. 1. This is part of their Phys. Ed./Health curriculum.

Report Cards and Portfolio Conferences--Report cards went home on Friday. A sign-up sheet is posted in the front hallway for Portfolio conferences being held on Nov. 22 and Nov. 23 in the evening. There will be up to four families in the classroom viewing portfolios at the same time. I will be in the classroom as well to answer any questions. If you would like an individual appointment at a different time, please email me or speak to me to arrange that.

Mme Helene will be available on Tuesday evening. If you would like to set up an individual conference with her you may do so by emailing her directly ecarty@bsls.ca or calling the school.

Shoe Box Donations--We will again be putting together Shoe Boxes for Samaritan's Purse. Your child has chosen to bring a few items as well as $1 to help with the shipping of these boxes. If you are unable to bring in the item(s) please let me know. We need the items in the classroom by Monday, November 21 as collection of the boxes will be on Tuesday.

Shake It Up--The students seemed to enjoy the Shakespearean Improv Play. We are hoping to start a bit of an improv club in the coming weeks.

Math--Gr. 8s are continuing to work on Ch. 3, the Pythagorean Theorem involving square roots and perfect squares. They should complete the chapter this week. The Gr. 7s have been working on Ch. 3 and we have looked at perpendicular bi-sectors and angle bi-sectors. We should finish the chapter this week.

Social Studies--We are continuing to work on Ch. 2 on The Early Peoples. We are currently discussing the Stone Age.

Ms. Kuhl--Our student teacher will be with us full time starting November 23 until December 22. She will be teaching ELA and Gr. 7 Math primarily but will be doing some Religion, Art and Social Studies. The students have really enjoyed having her in the classroom.

Report Cards and Portfolio Conferences--Report cards will go home on Friday. A sign-up sheet will be posted in the hallway for Portfolio conferences being held on Nov. 22 and Nov. 23 in the evening. There will be up to four families in the classroom viewing portfolios at the same time. I will be in the classroom as well to answer any questions. If you would like an individual appointment at a different time, please email me or speak to me to arrange that.

Shoe Box Donations--We will again be putting together Shoe Boxes for Samaritan's Purse. Your child has chosen to bring a few items as well as $1 to help with the shipping of these boxes. Please see the attached list. If you are unable to bring in the item(s) please let me know. We need them in the classroom by Friday, November 18 as collection of the boxes will be early next week.

Shake It Up--The students will be seeing Shake it Up on Thursday a.m. at 10:00. The Gr. 5/6 class will be going to the play as well. I will let drivers know who is driving tomorrow in preparation for Thursday.

Shops--Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately to walk to Shops. The weather is changing and they will be expected to walk to shops no matter what the weather is.

ELA--I will be checking reading logs on Tuesday for 150 min. of reading as well as Agendas for signatures. Students completed Remembrance Day activities this week and a Listener Response on the Hobbit.. Four Reader Responses for November will be due on Nov. 25.

Math--Gr. 8s are working on Ch. 3, the Pythagorean Theorem involving square roots and perfect squares. The Gr. 7s have begun Ch. 3 and we have looked at perpendicular bi-sectors.

Social Studies--We are continuing to work on Ch. 2 on The Early Peoples. We talked about Remembrance Day and viewed a Power Point Presentation.

Religion--Gave Pastor Schnarr a water balloon to use for chapel service in the tool box.

Art--The Fall Supper mural is up on our bulletin board. The students will be taking turns creating a bulletin board display each month. There is a new "November" bulletin board up for you to view.

It was great to see many of you last night at the Fall Supper! What a wonderful and successful evening! Thanks to all of the parents who participated in some way to make this event a fabulous family event as well as profitable!

The Hobbit--The students will be seeing the Hobbit on Tuesday a.m. at 9:45. MTYP has indicated that they have a no outdoor shoe policy for this play. The students are welcome to carry their indoor shoes with them and slip them on inside the theater when they take their outside shoes off, or they can go in socked feet. MTYP also has a no food/no drink (including candy and gum) as well as a no fragrance policy. I am asking that the students all wear their blue BSLS shirts for this event as well. I have lots of drivers so I will let parents know who will be driving for this event tomorrow via email. The play should last until approximately 11:00 and we will leave at 9:15. Mrs. Isaac will be accompanying the students to the play as I have an appointment. I will be at the school in the morning to organize the students and the vehicles. Thanks in advance for all of the volunteers.

Art--The students completed a Water Color Mural with Ms. Kuhl for Fall Supper. They each had one part of a 15 piece picture and enlarged it from a small 3 cm square to a normal piece of paper. If you saw it at the Fall Supper, it looked great!! The mural will be up on our bulletin board this week to see.

October is almost over! It's hard to believe we are only a short time away from Christmas!

Halloween--The students will be participating in the Costume Parade if they are dressed up. They will also be taking part in the student dance. After the recess break in the afternoon the class will be having French class. The students were told weeks ago that they would have to ask Ms. Carty if they could have a class party and they would have to organize activities and snacks. They did not speak with Ms. Carty. Therefore, they will have French class.

ELA--I will be checking reading logs on Monday for 150 min. of reading as well as Agendas for signatures. Students have be working on a Creative Writing Story this week for Halloween. I have conferenced with most of them and they will be presenting their final copy on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. Four Reader Responses for October are due today Friday, Oct. 28. Four Reader Responses will be due on Nov. 25. We have continued to work on descriptive writing, sentence structure, adjectives and adverbs.

Math--Gr. 8s started Ch. 3 on the Pythagorean Theorem. The Gr. 7s are completing Ch. 2 on decimals with front-end estimation. They will have a test next week.

Social Studies--We have begun Ch. 2 on The Early Peoples.

Religion--Pastor Schnarr visited us this week and the students had an opportunity to ask many questions about religion. It was very interesting and the students were very excited about Pastor's visit. We hope he returns again soon.

Art--The students started an art project with Ms. Kuhl for the Fall Supper. They are completing a Water Color Mural.

The weather has changed. Hopefully everyone is getting ready for winter which will soon be here. Please ensure your child has an inside and outside pair of shoes to wear at school that are comfortable and they want to wear. I took their outside shoes from them after recess one day last week to ensure they were changing their shoes after recess. Thanks for helping us out with this task!

ELA--I will be checking reading logs on Monday for 150 min. of reading as well as Agendas for signatures. The students had an opportunity to view their peers My Life Projects on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. They look great!! As I am assessing them, I am enjoying learning about the students and am very pleased with the hard work put into their projects! Thanks to parents for helping out with this amazing keepsake for your child! We worked on descriptive paragraph writing using adjectives and adverbs as well as subjects, predicates and sentence structure. We will be starting a Creative Writing Story this week for Halloween. Four Reader Responses for October are due on Friday, Oct. 28.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope you all have enjoyed a restful Thanksgiving Weekend with lots of family time.

ELA--I will be checking reading logs on Monday for 150 min. of reading as well as Agendas for signatures. The students had all week to work on their Scrapbook/Timeline/Autobiography project. The due date is Oct. 11 and I look forward to seeing their finished work. The students will have an opportunity to view their peers work as well through a gallery display and will be able to make comments on each others projects. It should be lots of fun. We will be starting a Short Story Anthology this week as well as work on some Creative Writing and descriptive writing. Four Reader Responses for October are due on Friday, Oct. 28.

Math--Gr. 8s have begun Ch. 2 on ratios and rates. The Gr. 7s will start Ch. 2 tomorrow. The Gr. 7s will also be bringing home their tests for signatures tomorrow.

Social Studies--We will be completing Ch.1 this week. We have been discussing Oral, Visual and Social history as well as Archaeology and Archaeologists. We will conclude by talking about different societies.

The students have made it through one full week of school and we have discussed rules, expectations, and set up our classroom routines.

ELA--Students have set up their Power Paragraph Journal and Reader Response Journal. I will check their logs on Monday for 150 min. of reading. The students presented their final copy of "My Summer Vacation" on Friday. I also gave their first project to them...a Scrapbook/Timeline/Autobiography. I will attach the document for you to browse. Please help your student by finding pictures of them to go with each year of their life. They can be digital or we can photocopy/print them in color at the school.

Math--Both grades have begun Ch. 1. Gr. 7s should expect a quiz on Monday to end unit one.

Social Studies--We conducted some research on Sept. 11, 2001 and presented on Friday discussing the impact this historic event has on society today.

French--Began oral communication on my family.

Agenda--I will check their agenda for daily signatures each Monday.

The students practiced painting with watercolors with Ms. Kuhl. They will be completing an art project with her this week.

First Day Update--Sept. 7, 2011

I hope everyone had a great day and all are ready for a full day of classes tomorrow.

I apologize for any confusion at the end of the day because of Shops. I spoke with everyone that I met with for home visits/phone calls that Shops would be this afternoon but some of you may have missed the reminder email that I tried to send on the weekend or forgot. I had an intermittent email connection and it looks as though it didn't send out. Again, I am very sorry.

Shops Information--Students are to walk directly from BSLS to Nelson Macintyre Collegiate after lunch recess on every Day 2, p.m. They have approximately 15 minutes to walk and be settled in their classroom at the high school. Mrs. McCrea, Miss Kuhl and I walked them there today and they were a bit late. Students are to be picked up at Nelson Macintyre at 3:45 when Shops is over. You can arrange a meeting place with your child. You should only transport your child from Nelson Macintyre. If your child is registered in the After School Program at BSLS then they should walk directly back to BSLS when dismissed. There will be a group of students returning to the school. If they do not return by 4:00 we will be calling parents and emergency contacts as we will assume they are missing! Students are not allowed to stop at 7-11 or any other place on the way to or from Shops. These rules will be reviewed again with the group tomorrow. It is extremely important for you to arrange a pick-up plan and location for your student. If they are not registered in the After School Program we will assume you have picked them up and are not our responsibility. A Shops Calendar should have gone home today with your child. If you have any questions, please let me know.

School Supplies--The students sorted through their supplies today. They will slowly organize their binders for their subjects this week. Students should bring a 2-pocket folder for their Writing Folder. This is an addition to their supply list.

Home Reading--By the end of the week the students will receive information about their Home Reading Program. They must have you sign a log for 150 minutes of reading each week. It is their responsibility to bring the log to you and have it signed for Monday for me to check. The first Monday will be Sept. 19.

Agenda--I will check their agenda for daily signatures each Monday. Again, it is their responsibility to write down their homework each day and have you sign it. This is in preparation for Gr. 9.

Canteen--Canteen will open next week for milk and mostly healthy food choices.

Welcome--Ms. Kuhl, a teacher candidate from the University of Winnipeg, is in our classroom for most of the year. She is in her last year of Education and will be completing teaching blocks with us this year. Katarina Greer is a new student in our class who comes from Victoria, BC. We hope they both have an enjoyable year.

Hooray!!! It's finally here!! Graduation and the last week of school! Have a safe and happy summer!

ELA—Students have completed both novel studies on Firegirl and Old Yeller as well as their final project. This week we will be continuing to complete our cross curricular unit dealing with Sex Education as well as our last religion lessons. On June 30 in the morning I will be showing Old Yeller as the end of year movie!! Sad movie for a sad day!

Math--Both classes have completed their math curriculum for the year. During Math class until the end of the year we will be completing our religion curriculum and health unit.

Social Studies—one class this week on Tuesday

Science—We will finish our research on Canadian Contributions to science. Presentations are due on June 22nd and we will complete the presentations in our remaining class time.

French--We finished our French yearbook.

There will be no more band for the rest of the year!!!

This will be due on June 22 with a final project due on June 23. A permission slip was sent home for our last unit which is cross curricular dealing with Sex Education. It was due today, June 17.

Math--Grade 7s are completing Ch. 12 on Median, Mode and Means. They will write their test on Tuesday. Grade 8s have completed Chapter 12 on Tessellations. During Math class until the end of the year we will be completing our religion curriculum and health unit.

Congratulations to the Gr. 2-4 Violin Players! The will be seen on CBC News tonight at 6:00 following the sports broadcast.

ELA—Two Reader Responses for June are due June 17. Students are completing either Old Yeller or Firegirl on Monday and will be handing in their Literature Circle Positions and Chapter Questions. They will switch novels on Monday and do a Literature Circle and Chapter Questions on the opposite novel from what they completed. A permission slip was sent home this week for our last unit which is cross curricular dealing with Sex Education. Please have it handed in for Friday, June 17.

Math--Grade 7s started Ch. 12 on Median, Mode and Means. Grade 8s are completing Chapter 12 on Tessellations and will complete a final project/test next week.

ELA—Two Reader Responses for June are due June 17. Students presented, handed in, and peer evaluated their Poetry Anthologies. They have been assessed and returned to students. The students have started reading either Old Yeller or Firegirl and will be working in Literature Circles to complete the novel including novel questions and a final project. Congratulations to the Band for their performance on Wednesday at Evening of the Arts. They did very well despite the cold.

ELA—Two Reader Responses for June are due June 17. We have been working on our Poetry Unit and the students are currently writing their Poetry Anthology which was given an extension and is due, Monday May 30. The students will present a few of their poems and will have a gallery for all to see their works. In June we will focus on Literature Circles for two short novels with final projects for each. A permission slip will be coming home in the next couple of weeks for our last unit which is cross curricular dealing with Sex Education.

Math--Grade 7s have completed Ch. 10 on Patterns and Expressions and should have brought their test home for signing over the weekend. They start Ch. 11 on Linear Expressions and Equations on Monday. Grade 8s wrote their tests on Friday for Ch. 10, Solving Linear Equations. They will start Chapter 11 on Probability on Monday.

Social Studies—The students are continuing to present their games, essays and trivia that they creating from their research on societies within Europe and the Americas.

Science—We have completed experiments on strengthening spaghetti bridges and have now begun the final project.

French--We continued to work on our French yearbook to review our year's work.

ELA—Four Reader Responses for May are due May 27. Final copies for the Creative Writing Story were due today and the students will be presenting them next week. We have been working on our Poetry Unit and the students are currently writing their Poetry Anthology. It will be due May 27.

ELA—Four Reader Responses for May are due May 27. The students have been working on another Creative Writing Story this week. Rough Drafts are due on Monday and I will be conferencing with each of them and editing during next week. We will finally be starting a poetry unit this week.

Math--Grade 7s are completing Ch. 9 on Integers and will be tested next week. Grade 8s are completing Linear Relationships in Ch. 9 and will be tested next week.

Social Studies—The students have been discussing the political parties in Canada. They have talked about the promises by parties and what the students agree and don’t agree with.

Science—We continued working on internal and external forces on structures, using the Tower of Pisa as a case study. We will be working on reinforcing stability next.

French--We finished our food study.

Merry Christmas!!! Ooppss!! Happy May!!

Thank you to all the parents and students who helped to make our Spring Tea a big success. It was great to see such a large group working together.

The students participated today in Music Monday. The Gr. 6-8 Band played the song "Tomorrow is Coming" by Luke Doucette and the entire school sang the song outside at 11:45.

ELA—Four Reader Responses for May are due May 27. The students completed a creation of their own flower species for the Spring Tea. They will be put on the bulletin board for display during Evening of the Arts. We will be starting a poetry unit this week as well as another Creative Writing Story. We are also preparing skits for our chapel presentation.

Happy Easter!

I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Easter Weekend.

Students should have brought home a gold sheet last week asking each family to donate some baking for the Spring Tea. Our class suggestion was on dozen Brownies. There are containers available in the school office for you to place your baking in and have it delivered to the school by Friday for set up and pricing. The students should also have brought home a volunteer permission form for them to help serve at the tea on Saturday. That form should be returned to the school as soon as possible for scheduling of the volunteers.

ELA—Four Reader Responses for April are due Apr. 29. The students completed their Children's Bible Story Books and presented them on Thursday. We worked on some Vocabulary Sentences with a Spelling Test this week. We will be starting a poetry unit this week as well as another Creative Writing Story.

Math--Grade 7s completed Ch. 8 on Circles and will bring home their tests for signing today. The start Ch. 9 on Integers today. Grade 8s completed Ch. 8 on Integers and should bring their tests home today for signing. They start Linear Relationships today in Ch. 9.

Social Studies--The students watched a video on sustainability and discussed some of the details pertaining to that.

Science--We are working on stations to improve stability in structures based on the force of gravity. We will look at other forces this week.

French--We continued to work on our Food Study and also did a bit of vocabulary work on Easter words.

Good Morning!

Welcome Winter again!!! Hopefully the snow completely disappears today and we start seeing some spring in time for Easter.

ELA—Four Reader Responses for April are due Apr. 29. The students have been working on their Children's Bible Story Books. They are due April 21 and will be presented to the class that day. The students will evaluate each other's stories before I do to give realistic feedback. They look great so far and I am excited to see them all. We worked on Synonyms, Homonyms and Antonyms this week as well to tie into our story writing from before Spring Break. We will be starting a poetry unit this week or next as well as another Creative Story.

Math--Grade 7s will be completing Ch. 8 on Circles this week with a test later in the week. Grade 8s will be completing Ch. 8 on Integers and will be tested on it later in the week.

Social Studies--The students have been summarizing what they have learned this year so far relating to Africa, Asia and Australasia in an essay format.

Science--We have been working on a final unit assignment which is due on Wednesday. We will begin our last unit, Forces and Structures on Monday.

French--We started our study on Food through various grammar and writing activities.

Good Evening!

We have all survived our first week back after spring break. Hopefully we can get back into our routine for Term 3.

ELA—Four Reader Responses for April are due Apr. 29. The students have all now handed in and presented their final projects for Freak the Mighty. We will be watching the movie "The Mighty" which is based on the novel this week, probably Friday. Some students choose to present their Creative Writing Stories. We saw our last MTYP play, Circus Incognitus and the students really enjoyed it. Thanks to Mrs. Woo for driving.
We began working on our Children's Bible Story Books. They are due on April 21 before Easter Weekend. We will be starting a poetry unit this week or next.

Math--Grade 7s began Ch. 8 on Circles. Grade 8s started Ch. 8 on Integers.

Social Studies--The students have been looking at cultural, political and economic consequences of colonization on the quality of life in a particular country and setting up a news broadcast in the chosen country.

Science--We have now finished our unit on Particle Theory. The students will be given a final evaluation to work on next week.

French--We worked on sentence writing and grammar in French class.

It was great seeing everyone this week. Thank-you everyone for scheduling meetings during this week. I will be out of town starting tomorrow for the week. The students can email me about their projects if they have any questions during the week. Ms. Lang will be in for me and I have spoken to her about all of the assignments. She will be happy to help the students out!

Mrs. Thiessen's last day will be April 1st officially. Mrs. McCrea will be returning after Spring Break. We wish Mrs. Thiessen well and the students will really miss her.

Spirit Week has ended and the students seemed to enjoy themselves. Thanks to all for participating.

We will watch the Rate and Review--Smoking Commercials on Monday. If you have any objections please email me.

I have been keeping students in at lunch recess if they have not completed their class work or homework. So far it has been successful for completing work but it has meant that I have students every lunch hour each week. As most of the students do not like going outside, this has seemed a great idea for them. Thus, the students finish their work at lunch but will receive consequences as well for not completing their work on their own time. So far, students have been doing cleaning jobs for Mrs. Sands but may also help Mr. Cardinal if this continues. I would like to encourage them to complete homework and classwork when required.

Happy Spirit Week!

This week the students have been asked to participate in a number of activities including "dress-up" days. Monday was school colors day. Tuesday is Sports Day. Wednesday will be Favorite Character Day followed by Wacky Hair and Clothing Day on Thursday. On Friday we will have Pyjama Day and the students will view a movie sometime during the morning to end the week. Some of the activities the students will be involved in are: DEAR, Moo Reader Contest, Moostache judging, etc. It is a very busy and exciting week.

Good Afternoon!

I hope everyone is surviving the cold snap we have been experiencing.

The ski trip went very well. The students all skied and enjoyed each others company. I hope no one is too sore and bruised. Thank you to Mr. B and Mr. Dickson for skiing with us. Holiday Mountain was ours exclusively because of the weather and this worked out perfectly as all of the staff lavished their attention solely on us. We had the run of the ski resort. It was great!!

ELA—We are completing the Let Me Tell You Anthology. Three Reader Responses for January are due Feb. 1. The students presented descriptive paragraphs to the class which they also peer evaluated. We are finishing up an art project using lines and shading.

Math--Grade 7s have been working on Probability in Ch. 5. They should finish by the end of this week. Grade 8s have been working on Surface Area of Prisms and should finish Ch. 5 by the end of this week.

Important Reminder: We will need a cheque for ski and board rentals by January 19, 2011. The cost for ski rentals, lift tickets, remainder of transportation and taxes will be $47.00 and snow boarding will be $55.50. Please make the cheque payable to Beautiful Savior Lutheran School. If cheques or cash are not received on or before Jan. 19 your student will not be able to attend the ski trip.

The bus will be leaving the school at 7:15 a.m. on Jan. 21 and returning at approximately 5:30 p.m. Students should arrive at the school for 7:05 a.m.

Students will be allowed to have Ipods, cameras, etc. but will be responsible for them. The school will take no responsibility for lost, stolen or broken personal electronics. I will allow students with cell phones to call their parents on the way home from the resort to let them know the exact time of our arrival at the school. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Good Afternoon!

It was great to see everyone at the concert last night and at the Forks performance. The band did great!

The ski trip has been booked. We will need a deposit payment by Monday, December 20, 20010 for $58.00. Please make the cheque payable to Beautiful Savior Lutheran School. Social Studies--Students are looking at the most powerful people in the world and why they are powerful.

Science—We completed our lessons on sustainable development and will start to compare cellular respiration to photosynthesis in the new year.

Weekly Update December 13

Good Morning!

What a super cold weekend! I hope this weather breaks soon!

I sent home two permission slips last week; MTYP for Jan. 6 and the Ski Trip for Jan. 21. Please make sure they are returned by Friday this week so I can count numbers for each. The students will be walking to MTYP if I can't get drivers.

Please check your email for a list of items your child has signed up to bring for our class Christmas Hamper. In addition, the students who did not sign up for three items must bring in $2 to help cover the costs of gifts for the children and fresh goods. Our family consists of a Mom and four children. The items need to be in by Thursday this week so that the hamper can be delivered on Friday or Monday. Thank you in advance.

ELA—We will be starting a short novel study on The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. If there is time before the break we will finish the Short Stories Anthology. Three Reader Responses for December are due Dec. 21.

Math--Grade 7 will finish Ch. 4 on Percents, Decimals and Fractions and have a test Tuesday or Thursday this week. Grade 8s have completed Ch. 4 on Fractions, Decimals and Percents and will be having their test today.

Social Studies--Students arelooking at the most powerful people in the world and why they are powerful.

Science—We finished our case study of the sustainability of the fishing industry and will look at the Aboriginal perspective on sustainability this week.

French—We continued our Christmas study through various activities inclass.

You will be receiving information regarding the ski trip shortly. Our tentative date, which will be confirmed next week will be Jan. 21. Costs and deadlines will be included.

ELA—The students are continuing their work on a Short Stories Anthology. Their Creative Writing project rough draft is due on Tuesday and will be completed by the end of the week. Three Reader Responses for December are due Dec. 21. We have been talking about Social, Moral Issues as well as Personal Image in ELA. The student’s watched Happy Feet on this theme and will be answering questions on the movie.

Math--Grade 7 have completed Ch. 3 and have started Ch. 4 on Percents, Decimals and Fractions. Grade 8s are working on the last unit in Ch. 4 on Fractions, Decimals and Percents.

Social Studies--Students discussed and looked at characteristics of the most powerful countries in the world and the least powerful countries.

Science—We have discussed succession through a hypothetical example of succession and we have now been using an article on succession in the Mt. St. Helen’s area. We will begin sustainable development on Monday.

French—We started our Christmas activities in French class.

What a snowy week we have had. Please make sure that your student has warm clothes and boots for recess.

Thank-you for attending the Student-Led conferences this week. I’m glad the students were able to show you their work and goals for next term.

The student's poems and artwork that they completed for chapel are on the bulletin board outside the classroom.

ELA—The students are continuing their work on a Short Stories Anthology, Let Me Tell You. They have also been given a new Creative Writing topic to brainstorm for the weekend. Reader Responses for November are due Dec. 1. Students must complete four responses by that date.

Math--Grade 7s are completing Ch. 3 and learned about parallel and perpendicular lines, acute, right and obtuse angles and area of the parallelogram and area of a triangle. There will be a test next week. Grade 8s have started Ch. 4 on Fractions, Decimals and Percents.

Social Studies--Students discussed First and Third World Countries and the differences. We talked about the needs of the Third World Countries and how different organizations help with those needs. The students are researching relief organizations.

Science—We have begun our unit on Ecosystems by defining them, exploring abiotic and biotic factors and we are now examining an example of succession. We will continue this next week and begin sustainable development.

French—We continued our study on verbs in French class.

Good Morning!

It seems as though winter has come upon us suddenly. Please make sure that your student has warm clothes for recess. The play, Jason and the Argonauts, that we saw at MTYP was quite good. Most of the students thought it was funny.

Please make sure to sign up for Student Led Conferences this week on Wednesday and Thursday. There are four spots available for each time slot on each night. Mr. Tyborowski will also be available for meetings on Wednesday from 3:30-5:15.

Mr. Dickson has returned back to Brandon University. We thank him for all of his extra help and wish him good luck with his future education and experience.

This Wednesday we will be presenting in Chapel.

ELA—The students are once again working on a Short Stories Anthology, Let Me Tell You. We hope to finish the book by Christmas and will start a class novel in the new year. The new due date for November’s Reader Responses is Dec. 1. Students must complete four responses by that date.

Good Afternoon!

The school attended a very moving Remembrance Day Service today. Thanks to Ms. Thwaites for planning the service.

ELA—The students worked on a Remembrance Day mini-unit with our student teacher, Mr. Dickson, this week. Their creative writing assignments are posted on the bulletin board. The new due date for November’s Reader Responses is Dec. 1. Students must complete four responses by that date.

Math--Grade 7s have started Ch. 3 and learned about parallel and perpendicular lines. Grade 8s are working through Ch. 3, The Pythagorean Theorem and finding the length of the unknown side of the triangle.

Social Studies--Students were asked to create a situation with their group, where a country is in need of Canadian help. They had to choose either humanitarian help, peace keeping, or armed forces. The wrote this up and acted it out.

Science—We are working on a final design project for the Earth's Crust.

French—We studied a Remembrance Day poem in French and presented it during the Remembrance Day Ceremony.

Good Afternoon!

The students had 4 hours this week devoted to a performance and learning Taiko (Japanese Drumming). They all seemed to enjoy learning this skill. I found it very theraputic.

ELA—Students continued with their anthology book Let Me Tell You. We worked on prepositions as well. The new due date for November’s Reader Responses is Dec. 1. Students must complete four responses by that date. The students will be working on a Remembrance Day mini-unit with our student teacher, Mr. Dickson, this coming week.

Math--Grade 7s have finished their chapter on decimals and had their test today. They will be bringing home for signing on Monday. Grade 8s are working through Ch. 3, The Pythagorean Theorem and estimating square roots.

Social Studies--Students presented their country's economic activity assignment.

Science—We have been and will be studying earthquakes, volcanoes and mountain building.

French—We reviewed some French questions and vocabulary.

Happy Halloween! What a nice night!! Hope everyone enjoyed it!

ELA--Students completed and presented their Halloween Stories. They had a lesson on Japanese language which will be used this week while learning Taiko (Japanese Drumming). Students will continue with their anthology book Let Me Tell You. Tomorrow, four reader response journal entries are due.

The students enjoyed seeing the very moving MTYP performance called Jake's Gift. The theme was Remembrance Day and most students were very touched by it. Definitely hit home the reason to remember!!

Sorry for the late update! I thought I’d combine two weeks as I was sick last weekend! I hope to see every one at the Fall Supper on Saturday!

ELA--175 minutes of home reading logged for the week. The students are given 15-20 minutes of reading time per day to log in their Reading Logs if they read in class.
Students have started their anthology book Let Me Tell You. They are working on a Halloween Story that will be presented to the class on Friday.

Math--Grade 7s have been working on adding, subtracting and multiplying decimals. Grade 8s completed Ch. 2 and are bringing home their tests for signing. They are starting Ch. 3, The Pythagorean Theorem on Monday.

Science—We have been working on geological resources and now will move on to plate tectonics. They have a 5 paragraph essay about natural resources due Monday.

Happy Thanksgiving!

ELA--For Monday, and each Monday of this year, students will need to have completed their 175 minutes of home reading and have it logged for the week. The students are given 15-20 minutes of reading time per day to log in their Reading Logs if they read in class.

Students handed in their All About Me Projects this week and I hope to have them marked over the weekend. They also wrote a Thanksgiving story during the week and all of them are posted outside our classroom on the bulletin board. Next week I will be reviewing Listener Responses and we will be starting a book of Short Stories.

Art—Students completed a Leaf Rubbing Collage with an Acrostic Poem today. They are posted on the wall outside of our classroom for you to view. These will be going to the Fall Supper for decorations.

Math--Grade 7s completed Ch. 1 this week and had a test on Thursday. They will be bringing it home for signing on Tues. Grade 8s started Ch. 2 on ratios and are currently working on unit rates.

Science—We are working on glaciation/erosion. We will begin plate techtonics next week.

Social Studies—The students discussed fossil fuels, ic. Crude oil and how we depend on it. We began talking about our ecological footprint.

French—We continued to work on Fall vocabulary with different Thanksgiving activities.

Weekly Update September 25

Good Morning!

It looks like we are going to have some summer weather back! Yeah!!!

The Grade 7/8 class is still adjusting to homework expectations in some areas. It is up to the student to write down in their agenda what is due for homework or projects and have them completed on time. In ELA and Math, if homework has not been completed we will still be proceeding in class but students will be staying in at lunch hour until their work is completed.

ELA--For Monday, and each Monday of this year, students will need to have completed their 175 minutes of home reading and have it logged for the week. They will need to have produced a minimum of four Reader Responses by Oct. 1. Book and Movie Reports have been marked and should have been brought home for signing on Thursday. They must be signed for Monday or you will be receiving a phone call home with their mark. We started an All About Me Project with outlines and specific instructions and examples. The project will be due on Fri. Oct. 1.

Religion--Students have their prayer journals assessed on Fridays. The students are supposed to come up with a verse or story that can be converted into modern day life for their Chapel Presentation on Wednesday.

Math--Grade 7s completed Unit 1-2 this week with a quiz. Grade 8s completed Unit 1-2 and most of Unit 1-3 this week. Grade 8s will have a test this coming week with the Grade 7s to follow at the end of the week or early the following week.

Science--Students are completing a crystal formation experiment at home this weekend. It does require use of a stove so please supervise that part. We will explore the rock cycle this week.

Social Studies--Students planned a trip to Zimbabwe, Africa and from Zimbabwe to a destination of their choice and back to Winnipeg. They need to complete the itinerary from their travels for Monday's class.

French--We worked on days of the week and numbers vocabulary. The students created their own calendar for the month of September.

Scholastic Book Orders have been placed and shipped today. We should receive them next week. Thanks for the orders. Unfortunately, we didn't have enough to get bonus coupons for ordering books for the classroom this order.

The students have been asked to bring home their AGENDAS on Fridays and have parents review them and then return them to me on Monday a.m. so I can check for signatures and communication. Students should be bringing home their agendas every day to make sure homework is completed. Mrs. Bemister checks agendas at the end of most days. IT IS UP TO THE STUDENT TO BRING THE AGENDA TO YOU! I am trying to teach them organization and responsibility as they need this for high school.

Compassion Canada--You should have received a letter home last week. Please bring your $1 or $10 for the year to chapel on Wednesday.

Weekly Update Sept. 10

Welcome back and congratulations on finishing the first week of school! (Not a full week but a week anyway!)

The Grade 7/8 class have been busy organizing their supplies, binders, and getting used to "new" expectations. I think things have gone very well and look forward to a great year! The students will be able to bring home any extra supplies in about 2 weeks so they have more room in their desks and lockers.

The Grade 7/8s have the privilege of staying in at morning recess with me in the classroom. Most of them do not enjoy going outside and just use the time to socialize. They now can do that inside.

ELA--We have gone over the Home Reading Program and Reader Response Journals and students have started to log their time. I read the students a book and we completed a sample Reader Response. They are expected to read 175 minutes per week and have 15 minutes per day in class to complete reading or responses. We will be starting on Book and Movie Reports next week.

Religion--Students have been given agendas that include a daily scripture and devotion for them to reflect upon and write prayer.

Math--We will be starting Math next week.

Art--We created Name Cards for our lockers.

Science--We have begun o study of the Earth's crust. Next week we will study rock formation and crystal growth.

Social Studies--Played World trivia games and planned a travel route through Europe.

French--We worked on various vocabulary activities.

Weekly Update June 7--18

The count down is on by both students and teachers. Seven more days to go!

If you are going to be away or your student will not be attending any of the last days of school, please let me know. Many of the students have indicated family plans for June 28-30 and will not be in attendance. All reports will go out by mail if students are not present on June 30. All lockers and desks will need to be cleaned out before the student leaves for the year.

ELA & Religion--The students have now completed their final stories and presented them to the class on Friday. They were all very well done. We completed our sex ed. unit and I will be showing the 15 min. video today. The class will be presenting at chapel on Wed. to share their favorite songs, bible stories and respect for chapel service. Gr. 8 students will also be working on their speeches for grad and Gr. 7s will be working on their farewell presentation for the Gr. 8s.

Math--We have completed all of our curriculum.

Social Studies--Worked on researching a person or organization that works to improve the lives of others in the world.

Science--Students are finishing up the mini-unit on optics.

French--We worked on various vocabulary activities.

ELA & Religion--We have finished Tuck Everlasting and the students have started reading new novels. They should complete the reading by the end of next week and finish up their Literature Circle Units by June 8. The students will be ending the year with Religion lessons and Health units. A permission slip will be sent home soon regarding the Sex Education Unit.

Math--The Grade 7s are working on Ch. 11, Solving Equations. The Grade 8s have started Ch. 11 on Probability. Both grades have Ch. 11 and 12 to complete.

Social Studies--Students created murals of the middle ages. They are starting a unit on the Renaissance.

Science--We are finishing up mass, weight, volume and density. We will begin Optics late in the week.

French--We continued our study of food.

Good Morning! May is quickly coming to an end. Enjoy your week!

Evening of the Arts will be next Wednesday, May 26 at 6:30. The band, violins, kindergartens and Jump Rope for Heart students will be putting on special presentations. There will also be art work displayed in the school.

The volunteer appreciation lunch is today at 12:00 if you can attend.

ELA & Religion--We are finishing up our Tuck Everlasting Unit. The students are handing in their finalized questions, vocabulary, Literature Circle group information, and final projects on the book today. They will have their reflection test on the book tomorrow.

Math--The Grade 7s are completing Ch. 10 on Patterns with a test Tues. or Wed. The Grade 8s are completing Ch. 10 on Linear Equations hopefully this week.

Social Studies--The students presented information on the middle ages to the class.

Science--We watched Bill Nye about fluids, learned te properties of fluids and the particle theory of matter. Next week we will test viscosity.

French--We continued our study on food.

Happy Mother's Day! I hope you all enjoyed your coupon books and flowers the students made for you. Most of them thought it was pretty "corny". I thought it was a nice gesture.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART
Last week an envelope was sent home with your child regarding collecting donations for the Heart and Stroke Foundation as part of Jump Rope for Heart. Your child may like to collect sponsors or you may choose not to participate. Either way the children are welcome to come out to the jump rope practices at noon recess on Wednesdays. This group of children will be performing a jump rope routine at The Evening of the Arts on - Wednesday, May 26. If you have any questions please speak to Miss Paul.

ATHLETES IN ACTION
This week a group of young athletes are visiting our school on Friday, May 14, and will be conducting Phys. Ed. Classes for the students.

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION LUNCH
Our school is hosting a Volunteer Appreciation Lunch for all of the many, many volunteers who help out at our school in so many different ways. The date of this lunch is on Monday, May 17. Hopefully all of you have received an invitation via e-mail or mail. The office would appreciate an RSVP if you are able to attend so that we can plan how many lunches to prepare. If you know of anyone that was overlooked and should receive an invitation, please let the office know. We hope to see all of you there!

ELA & Religion--We finised reading Tuck Everlasting on Friday. The students will be completing their questions, vocabulary, Literature Circle groups, reflection test and final projects on the book this week and early next week. We will be watching the movie later this week or next. I will be sending home a permission slip as it is rated PG.

Math--The Grade 7s are working on Ch. 10 on Patterns. The Grade 8s are being tested on Ch. 9 on Linear Relations today.

Social Studies--The students began a unit on the Middle Ages and are reading and summarizing information.

Science--We've finished looking at the flood and are moving on to water treatment systems.

French--We started our new study on food. On Friday the students made Mother's Day cards.

May is already here. Only two more months of school left!

The students participated in Music Monday today at 12:00 by singing a song composed by Serena Ryder for all Canadian schools to sing. This event occurs the first Monday in May to recognize the importance of music programs across Canada. The students very enthusiastically sang and had a lot of fun learning the song.

ELA & Religion--The students continue to read Tuck Everlasting and are enjoying it. They are working through the book reading orally in class, completing questions, vocabulary and meeting in Literature Circles for discussion. We will be watching the movie once we are done reading. I will be sending home a permission slip as it is rated PG.

Math--The Grade 7s have started Ch. 10 on Patterns. The Grade 8s have started Ch. 9 on Linear Relations.

Social Studies--The students created tests for classmates based on their research from last week.

Thank you very much to the PIP Committee and all the parent and student volunteers for devoting their time to a successful Spring Tea on Saturday. The event seemed to run very smoothly and everyone enjoyed the food and the vendors. A great job was done by all!!!

Last Thursday, April 22 was Earth Day and all of the students in the school spent some time outside picking up garbage on the school grounds and in the neighbourhood. Thank you to all the students and everyone who are working on protecting our earth.

ELA & Religion--The students are reading Tuck Everlasting and are enjoying it. They are working through the book reading orally in class, completing questions, vocabulary and meeting in Literature Circles for discussion. We will be watching the movie once we are done reading. What a beautiful weekend! Hope everyone got outside to enjoy the weather!

The PIP Committee is looking for student volunteers to help serve at the Spring Tea on April 24th. Permission forms went home two weeks ago and very few have come back. If you can commit to a time session on Saturday, please send the form back to the school or email me and I'll send another one home to complete. Parent volunteers would be greatly appreciated as well. The sign up sheet is on the PIP bulletin board.

ELA & Religion--The students have started reading Tuck Everlasting and seem to be really enjoying it. They have had one Literature Circle meeting and have completed questions and vocabulary words.

Math--The Grade 7s are completing a short chapter on Adding and Subtracting Integers. They should finish by the end of the week. The Grade 8s are completing Ch. 8 on Multiplying and Dividing Integers with a test this week.

Social Studies--The students began a new unit on Maya, Aztecs and Incas. Students looked up information from text books together./

Weekly Update April 11

Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. McCrea on the birth of their baby boy. I have no other details yet but will email with the exact information when I have it!!! We thank God for his long awaited arrival and hope all are well!!!

The Team Building Retreat went very well this week and the students all seemed to enjoy it. They especially enjoyed lunch! A big thank you goes out to Mrs. Woo and Mrs. Katyrynuik for preparing, serving, and cleaning up our taco lunch. Another huge thank you goes out to Mrs. Young for doing a fabulous job facilitating the retreat.

The students also enjoying a presentation put on by Crew Ministries on Thursday afternoon this week. They all participated and had fun with the songs and skits.

Show and Save Books were due on Friday. If you have not returned your sample book and/or your order, please do so on Monday so that we can complete this fundraising project as soon as possible.

ELA & Religion--The students have been working on persuasive paragraph writing. We reviewed Literacy Circles and will be starting a class novel, Tuck Everlasting. We visited Mrs. Butterfield's Kindergarten class and read our Children's Bible Stories to them. They all enjoyed having the "big kids" read to them. In Religion we have talked extensively about intellectual and emotional thinking/believing in terms of religion.

Math--The Grade 7s are finishing their chapter on Circles and will have a test on Tuesday. The Grade 8s completed Ch.7 on Volume and wrote a test on Friday. They will be starting Ch. 8 on Integers.

Social Studies--The students worked on an assignment comparing primary and secondary sources of information.

Science--We are working on contour maps, then tides and floods.

French--We worked on various spring and easter vocabulary activities.

Happy Easter!

The Team Building Retreat at Beautiful Saviour Lutheran Church has been re-scheduled for April 7. The students will leave after chapel time at the school. Transportation will be arranged. If you would like to pick up your child from the church at the end of the day, please let myself or the school know and that can be arranged. They students will be transported back to the school at the end of the day for dismissal. Attached is the permission slip for the Retreat. Please print it, fill it out and return it with the students on Tuesday or Wednesday morning. Thank-you!

A couple of parents in the grade 7/8 classroom have decided to make a lunch for the students while at the retreat. We are going to serve taco's (same as used for the fundraiser for Haiti). We will provide everything for this lunch which includes beverage and dessert, the cost is $5.00 per person. Money will be collected the morning of the retreat.

Four more days!!!

Thank you to all of you who were able to attend Parent Teacher interviews last week. I hope that Term three is successful for all of the students!

Mrs. McCrea's last day with us is Thurs. Mar. 25. We wish her good luck on her journey with the arrival of their baby and look forward to her return next April.

ELA & Religion--The students have been working on persuasive paragraph writing. We reviewed Literacy Circles and will be starting a class novel.

Math--The Grade 7s have been working on Ch. 8 about Circles. The Grade 8s have been working on Ch.7 on Volume and will complete it this week with a test when we return from Spring Break.

Social Studies--The students have finished taking notes on Ghana and Mali and filled out a chart on the goods that were traded. We also played a card game linked to trading goods in those locations.

Science--We are doing our stream development experiment and are hoping to work on mapping contours next week.

French--We continued to work on various verb activities.

On March 17 the students will be attending a Team Building Retreat at Beautiful Saviour Lutheran Church. The students will leave after chapel time at the school. Transportation will be provided. They are to bring a bag lunch with them as they will not be leaving the church to get food. They students will be transported back to the school at the end of the day for dismissal.

Math--The Grade 7s finished Chapter 7 on Fractions and will be bringing home their tests for signing tonight. They will start Ch. 8 on Circles today. The Grade 8s finished Chapter 6 on Fractions and should have gotten their tests signed over the weekend. They started Ch.7 last week on Volume and will be moving through this chapter quite quickly.

Social Studies--The students have been looking at the Islamic religion and modern day Ghana and Mali

Science--Stream development has been started this week and will be continued next week, followed by drawing topographic profiles.

French--We workd on verbs this week.

Congratulations to all of the skiers! Sounds like everyone had a great time and should now be recovered from the trip. Thanks to Ms. Paul and our chaperones for looking after the students so well.

On Thursday the class went to see The Rick Hansen Story at MTYP. Although their audio and lights weren't working, the play was very good and the students enjoyed it. This was the last of our MTYP plays for the year. Thanks to all of those people who have driven for us this year.

Thank you to the parents who volunteered to make Family Literacy Night on Friday such a success. I got to be a parent and really enjoyed the activities.

ELA & Religion--The students will be completing their Olympics Unit this week. In Religion the students should have handed in their Children's Bible Stories. They will be sharing them with the younger grades and during chapel.

Good Morning!

Good luck to the ski group! Have lots of fun and enjoy the snow!

ELA & Religion--The students have been working on an Olympics Unit studying athletes, characteristics and qualities, olympic history, etc. In Religion the students are working on their Children's Bible Stories. They are due, Feb. 26 when they return.

Math--The Grade 7s finished Chapter 6 and had a test on Fri. They will continue with fractions in Chapter 7. The Grade 8s will finish Chapter 6 this week and have a test early next week.

Social Studies—-Students created their own questions for the game show we played in class.

Science—-We have completed work on ocean currents and nxt week we will do an experiment to test the density of fresh water versus salt water.

French—-We finished our study on Fesitval du Voyageur. We had a great time on our field trip to the Festival.

SCHOOL MISSION PROJECTS

Over the last few weeks our school has been raising money for Haiti’s earthquake victims. Altogether with our various projects (Hats for Haiti, Taco Day Lunch, Bake Sale, private donations, a matching grant from Faith Life and a matching grant from the Federal Government) our school has raised $3000 to send to Haiti.

ELA & Religion--We have been working on some adverb/adjective worksheets and stories. Because of the field trips and activities during February, I decided to wait to start our novel study until Mar. 1. The students will be completing an Olympics Unit studying athletes, characteristics and qualities, olympic history, etc. In Religion the students are working on their Children's Bible Stories.
Math--Both grades have been working on Ch. 6, Fractions.
Social Studies—-Students are writing a test today on Ancient Greece and beginning a new unit.
Science—-We have worked on heat capacity of matter and ocean currents with note-taking.
French—-We began our Fesitval du Voyageur study.

Students should have brought home their provincial assessment documents yesterday. Please let me know if you haven't seen them or have any questions.

Good Afternoon! Whether the ground hog saw his shadow or not, we have at least six more weeks of winter to look forward to. Hopefully it will be mild.

ELA & Religion--The students have finished their Short Stories unit and you should have signed their test for them yesterday. We are working on some adverb/adjective worksheets and stories. We will start our novel studies soon with Tuck Everlasting. In Religion the students are working on their Children's Bible Stories. Their story maps are due tomorrow.
Math--Both grades have completed Ch. 5 and you should have signed their tests yesterday. Both Grades start Ch. 6 on Fractions.

Weekly Update Jan. 11--15

I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend.

ELA & Religion--The students continued to work on Short Stories with the theme of Courage. We will be having a test this week, likely Wednesday. In Religion we talked about scientific beliefs and the Word of God.
Math--Students are working on Ch. 5: Gr. 7--Probability, Gr. 8--3-D Surface Area. The grade 8 class should complete the chapter this week with a test on Monday of next week.
Social Studies—-We created a commercial for a product the students created in class based on a Greek God.
Science—-We looked at fluid movement in animals. We will work on unit review/unit test this week.
French—-We continued working on our study of winter sports and the Olympics.

Letters went home this week for our new stewardship project. We will be collecting school supplies for CLWR. Please send any of the items on the list to the school and the students will package them accordingly.

Field trip permission slips will go home today for the trip on Thursday. Could you please let me know via email as soon as possible if you are able to drive? We have a bit of a tight scheduling problem to make it to both events if we are walking and or busing. ELA & Religion--The students continue to work on Short Stories with the theme of Courage. We should finish this week and begin literary circles next week.
Math--Students have begun Ch. 5. Gr. 7--Probability, Gr. 8--3-D Surface Area.
Social Studies—-We are looking at Greek Gods in advertising and making our own products, with logos and slogans.
Science—-We discussed fluid movement in plants, then worked on movement in animals.
French—-We started our new study on winter sports and the Olympics.

Thank-you to Constable Anning for visiting the school and giving an informative presentation. The students seemed to enjoy his visit.

Letters went home this week for our new stewardship project. We will be collecting school supplies for CLWR. Please send any of the items on the list to the school and the students will package them accordingly.

Good Morning!

I hope everyone is enjoying their "cold" weekend. One week and the students are on Christmas break! I look forward to seeing you at the Christmas Concert on Wednesday evening.

ELA & Religion--The students continue to work on Short Stories with the theme of Courage. They have been talking about many different courageous people and should be completing their own "courageous" short stories by Thursday. We are also working on a Chapel Presentation.
Math--Grade 7s and 8s are finishing their chapters on Fractions, Decimals and Percents and will have a test by Thursday this week.
Social Studies--Students compared Roman and Greek gods and goddesses. We discussed boys and girls lives in ancient Sparta and how their lives are different than ours.
Science--Students are finishing our research on diseases and will look at specific organ systems if we have classes next week.
French--Students are working on various French Christmas activities in our Christmas Booklets.

The band had a fabulous performance on Monday at the Forks. I am really looking forward to hearing them play on Wednesday.

Thank-you to Mrs. Woo for helping with driving the students to MTYP on Thursday. The students were all glad to have a ride as it was very cold.

The students have all signed up for one or two items for our Christmas Hamper. Please ensure that these items are at school by Tuesday, Dec. 15 so that we can assemble our hamper and have it ready for delivery on Wed. Dec. 16. Also, please send $2 with your child if you haven't done so already to help pay for the turkey and other "fresh" items that need to be purchased for the hamper.

Wednesday, Dec. 16 is the school Christmas Concert at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church at 1541 St. Mary's Rd. The concert begins at 6:30 but the students are asked to be there for 6:00 to get organized. They should dress in their Christmas "best". Parents are also asked to donate one dozen "goodies" for after the concert. Please let Mrs. Madden know if you are able to bring some goodies.

During this week there will be many opportunites for students and their families to help with the major production of Christmas Hampers happening in the gym. On Monday, Dec. 14 students who are in grade 7/8 and are interested in helping to wrap approximately 500 presents, please sign up in the office. The evening will begin at 6:30 and will be at the school. Parents are encouraged to accompany their children for the evening. On Wed. and Thurs. the students will be scheduled to help out in the gym to assemble the hampers.

Because of the situation this week of articles going missing, students are now not allowed to leave the classroom during class time and are supervised in the hallways at recess and lunch. This will continue until someone comes forward and we can again regain the trust of all our students.

ELA & Religion--Students should have completed their creative writing Halloween Stories. We have read a few of them and the students did great....very scary! We have started writing descriptive power paragraphs in our journals. We walked to MTYP and most students thought the play was o.k. I thought it was great! I am very excited to finally start short stories this week.

Math--Grade 8s have finished Ch. 3 on the Pythagorean Theory and square roots and will have their test on Monday or Tuesday. Grade 7s are completing their last two units in Ch. 7 on Area of a Parallelagram and Triangle. A test will follow.

Social Studies--Students are plotting temperatures and precipitation of locations in Egypt, Sudan and Winnipeg in order for students to see what pyramid builders had to endure.

Science--Students are looking at unicellular organisms and will move on to cell division next.

Operation Christmas Child Shoe boxes--The paramedics picked up the boxes on Wed. when we returned from MTYP. Thank-you to those people who brought in their items. I was very disappointed that 7 students did not bring in their items and had to make phone calls home on Wed. morning to have parents bring items in for themselves and others. Also, a big thank-you to Mary who donated $6 so that both of our shoebox shipping costs were covered.

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES--This week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings we will be having conferences. Don’t forget to sign up on the bulletin board or speak to me about an alternative time. I have several time slots on Tues. and Thurs. afternoons from 2:00-3:30 if you are interested or we can meet at lunch or another suitable time.

ELA & Religion--Students are now working on creative writing Halloween Stories. They will finish them up this week. I can't wait to read them and see how they went. Students also prepared a short presentation on Proper Chapel Behavior and presented. We talked about different types of writing styles, read a book about Timmy the Plastic Bag and watched the Rate and Review anti-smoking commercials. This week we will be focusing on Remembrance Day, completing our Halloween Stories and starting short stories.

Math--Grade 8s are working on Ch. 3 on the Pythagorean Theory and square roots. Grade 7s wrote a test on Chapter 2 and began Chapter 3 on Parallel and Perpendicular Lines.

Social Studies--Students completed role playing the workers who built the pyramids for Pharaoh. They also drew pictures depicting women's lives and jobs in Egypt.

Science--Students have been discussing boy system organization and single-celled organisms and will continue this next week.

French--Students worked on vocabulary and verb activities. The students haded in their personal dictionaries for marks. This week we are going to do some Remembrance Day activities.

ELA & Religion--Students prepared chapel skits and worked on their journals. We also did a lesson on the History of Halloween and talked about vocabulary and did an internet scavenger hunt. Students are now working on creative writing Halloween Stories. We completed a Religion Lesson and God and Glory.

Math--Grade 8s are working on Ch. 3 on the Pythagorean Theory and square roots. Grade 7s are completing Chapter 2 on decimals and estimating and will have a test at the end of this week.

Social Studies--Students created their own fact or fiction game using the text based on information on Egypt.

Science--Students worked on designing an osmosis experiment. We may not be able to do it though.

French--Students are worked on Halloween activities.

ELA & Religion--Students completed reading assessments this week with me and did some of their home reading in class. They also worked on a Noun and Capitalization review. We will be doing some Religion/ELA based classes next week with focus on Halloween.

Math--Grade 8s started Ch. 3 on the Pythagorean Theory and square roots. Grade 7s are completing Chapter 2 on decimals and estimating and will have a test at the end of next week.

Social Studies--Students wrote a test for the first unit and began their second unit on Egypt.

Science--Students finished our basic discussion on diffusion and osmosis. Next week we'll work on designing an osmosis experiment.

French--Students are working on Fall Vocabulary/Study and doing some Halloween activities.

There is a Winnipeg Harvest collection box in the front hallway of the school. Please feel free to send items to donate to Winnipeg Harvest.

Good Afternoon!

We have had a busy week even though it was a short week. Sometimes the short weeks are the busiest.

ELA & Religion--The Timeline project has been completed. The students had the opportunity to have a "viewing gallery" of all the completed projects. Many students put alot of effort into their final project....I can't wait to look at them myself! Check out our bulletin boards. The students work for Thanksgiving is displayed on one of the boards. The other board is done by a different pair of students each month and is part of their Art curriculum. Next week: short stories, literature circles.

Math--Grade 8s are completing Ch. 2 and have a test on Tuesday. Grade 7s have begun Chapter 2 on decimals and estimating.

Social Studies--Students have worked on a map assignment where they identified and located mountain ranges, bodies of water, and deserts in ancient Mesopotamia. They have also been working on a critical thinking activity, pretending to be in a position of power and having to make important decisions for their community.

Science--Students have begun diffusion in cells and will continue with osmosis next week.

French--Students are working on Fall Vocabulary through various activities.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

I truly hope the Lord blesses us with good weather and a delightful, funfilled family weekend for everyone!

ELA & Religion--The Timeline project will be due on Wed. Oct. 14, after the Thanksgiving weekend. The students have been busily working this week and hopefully will be ready to hand-in a completed "scrapbook" Wednesday. We will be reviewing literacy circles and reading some short stories to reinforce and develop good discussion skills and role review with literacy circles. Today we had a "Thanksgiving Day". We did some sharing and talked about some history about Thanksgiving. The students completed some written work and it will be posted this afternoon on a new bulletin board outside our room. They are also completing a Thanksgiving Mosaic picture that will be posted on Tuesday.

Math--Grade 8s have started Chapter 2 and have completed 2 units this week. Grade 7s had a test on Wed. and were to have it signed and returned today. They have just begun Chapter 2 on decimals.

Social Studies--Students have been discussing religion, government, farming, food, medicine, housing and clothing of Mesopotamia.

Science--Students discussed animal and plant cell structures.

French--Students are working on Fall Vocabulary.

Scholastic book orders are due on Wed., Oct. 14.

Spirit Week was very interesting. There is quite a mix of participaters in the 7/8 class. I think they did enjoy it! Only a few Tasks for Terry sheets have been returned. Please bring them in on Tuesday if you forgot.

Good Afternoon,

I think fall has come.....let's hope it stays for a while and the snow stays away.

ELA & Religion--We did some review on sentence structure this week in addition to working with our journals and autobiography. The Timeline project will be due after the Thanksgiving weekend. Please make sure that the students have pictures/items to work with this week in class to finish up this project. We will be doing a short novel together and a Poetry Unit after the Timeline Project is complete.

Math--Grade 8s have finished Chapter 1 and had a test today. Grade 7s are completing the last unit in Chapter 1 and will have a test next week.

Social Studies--Students have been discussing root words, ice age, stone age and the development of humans.

Science--Students finished their work on cell theory and microscopes. Next week we will look at structures of animal and plant cells.

French--Students finished their study on school vocabulary and had a test.Scholastic book orders will go home on Monday.

Spirit Week--Oct. 5--Backwards/Wacky Day, Oct. 6--Sports Day, Oct. 7--PJ Day, Oct. 8--Hat Day ($1 for Terry Fox Foundation), Oct. 9--School Color Day (Blue or wear your school t-shirt from last year)

On Friday at 2:00 the students will be going on a walk around the community in honour of Terry Fox. All parents are welcome to join us. The students should have brought home a Tasks for Terry sheet with their hand print on it. Please return the sheet with donations by Friday, October 9.

A yearbook club has been formed and began last week Thursday at lunch. The group met again this Thursday but many of the students seem to have lost interest. We are hoping to create a yearbook for all of the students to enjoy. This is a large task and we need all the help we can get. Please speak with your child and have them see me if they are still interested. I'm sure we can find something of interest for them to do.

Good Afternoon,

The weather has been fabulous this week! Hard to believe October is right around the corner.

ELA & Religion--We continued to work on our Journals this week. I think that the expectations are very clear to all the students now. Students should be continuing to read at home and log their time accordingly. Everyone has begun working on their Autobiographical Project. Students should be asking you for pictures and information about their lives. Autobiography rough drafts are due on Tuesday. We continue to work on classroom organization, direction, classroom and school rules, and playground rules. I do think things are getting better but this will have to be an on-going task with constant reminders.

Math--Both grades have completed Unit 2 of Chapter 1. They both had a pop quiz again today as well!

Social Studies--Students have been talking about archaelogy.

Science--Students made slides of onion membranes and did a DNA experiment with kiwi. Next week we will learn more about cell theory and cell structures.

French--Students continued our study on school vocabulary through various activities. The students will have a test next week on the vocabulary.

Entertainment books were due last Monday. Please return the book or the money to the office immediately.

All of the teachers have been working really hard at having the students fill out their agenda both at the end of their class and at the end of the day. They should be bringing home their agendas daily for their own use but must bring home their agendas on Fridays and have parents review them and then return them to me on Monday a.m. so I can check for signatures and communication. IT IS UP TO THE STUDENT TO BRING THE AGENDA TO YOU! I am trying to teach them organization and responsibility as they need this for high school.

Progress this week has gone much better. The classroom looks much less of a disaster at the end of the day and the students seem to be falling into routines better. Expectations are being met a little better and students are realizing that they are expected to be good role models and must practice tasks to exemplify this if they are not providing evidence of being mature, responsible individuals. (Ask them about their "inside shoes" incident with Ms. McCrea.) We are on a positive road again.....maybe the change in the seating plan helped!

A yearbook club has been formed and began this week on Thursday at lunch. The group will meet every Thursday at lunch to work on creating a yearbook for this year. Jackie Watts and myself will be helping the students achieve their task.

The school will be having a spirit week October 5-9 in conjunction with the Terry Fox Run. You will receive more information next week.

Good Afternoon,

The Grade 7/8 class have had a very busy week. Hopefully they aren't too exhausted!

ELA & Religion--Power Paragraph Journals and Devotional Journals are assessed at the end of every week. They are given class time to complete both and are kept in the classroom so they have no reason not to have them completed, WELL! Students have been given their Reading Response Journals and should have been reading at home all week to accomplish their 150 minutes. They will be completing their first entry in class on Monday. Some students still need duo-tang folders. They are loosing their notes and assignments without them. We will be working on sentence structure this week and our new Autobiographical Project. Students should be asking you for pictures and information about their lives.

Math--Both grades have completed Unit 1 of Chapter 1. They both had a pop quiz today as well!Social Studies--Students have been discussing ancient cultures

Progress at school has not gone as well as I had hoped. In class work has not been completed to potential for most students and I have spent way too much time re-iterating instructions, repeating expectations, cleaning up after students and making routines work. It is important for everyone to follow directions and routines. I am hoping that after a week, routines have been placed and wasted time completing in class work and repeating information should end. Common rules such as "not talking while the teacher talks" seem very difficult for some students as well as keeping my things IN MY DESK and IN MY LOCKER are incredibly difficult. I continue to work with the students but am enforcing that in high school, their property would be stolen or gone if not kept in its proper location and organizing themselves will be their priority alone. In ELA and Math, classwork has been given but not homework. If they didn't work diligently in class, they had homework. I have given out zeroes for in class assignments that were simply not done or not handed in. I cannot assess things that are not here when sufficient time has been given to complete assignments in class.

Of course this doesn't apply to all students but I wanted all the parents to know how I will be handling in class assignments, etc.

Welcome back and congratulations on finishing the first week of school! (Not a full week but a week anyway!)

The Grade 7/8 class have been busy organizing their supplies, binders, and getting used to "new" expectations.
I think things have gone very well and look forward to a great year!

ELA--We have created Power Paragraph Journals and have talked about our Home Reading Program. I will give them the information for their Reading Response Journals next week. If they did not have 2 duotang folders, they will need them for Monday for their journals.

Religion--Students have been asked to prepare a devotional once a month for the year to share with the class. As well they have a devotional/prayer journal to summarize and reflect on all devotions shared and write a prayer for the day.

Math--We have discussed expectations for class and started with a Scavenger Hunt with their text.

Art--We created Name Cards for our lockers and signed-up for a month of Bulletin Board displays.

Science--We've begun discussing the targets and work for our unit on cells and systems. We will begin characteristics of living things next week.

Social Studies--We have been identifying places in Canada and the World on a map and we have discussed what we know about history.

French--We have been working on back to school vocabulary.

Scholastic Book Orders are due on Sept. 17.

The students have also been asked to bring home their agendas on Fridays and have parents review them and then return them to me on Monday a.m. so I can check for signatures and communication. IT IS UP TO THE STUDENT TO BRING THE AGENDA TO YOU! I am trying to teach them organization and responsibility as they need this for high school.
